news & views ● scoops News Reports from the World of Pageantry PAGEANTRY MAGAZINE PAGEANTRY MODELS IN THE NEWS Pageantry Editor Named Teacher of the Year Pageantry and PromTime models receive media recognition for all the right reasons P P ageantry Editor Erika Houvouras was named Teacher of the Year at Apopka High School, a school in Orange County Florida that serves over 3000 students. In addition to teaching freshman English, Erika is the leader of the freshman English department and the spon- sor of the National English Honors Society. When asked how it felt to receive this award, she stated: “This is truly a hum- bling experience. I am surrounded by some of the most de- voted educators I’ve ever known. My fellow teachers put an insane amount of time and energy into this profession. For them to choose me as their representative is an honor that I will always cherish.” As for what she enjoys most about teach- ing, Mrs. Houvouras responded: “I’ve been a teacher for al- most 20 years, and the best part of my job has never changed. It’s the kids. Kids are amazing. They never cease to surprise and impress me. I really do believe that I have the most im- portant job in the world. Every single day, I get the opportuni- ty to touch lives and inspire the future. And at the end of every school year, I feel confident that our future is in good hands. How awesome is that?”. □ MISS UNIVERSE ORGANIZATION Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega welcomes a beautiful daughter M iss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega and husband, NBA Boston Celtics star Al Horford, wel- comed daughter Alía Horford Vega on November 27, 2016. In announc- ing the birth of her daughter, Amelia announced via In- stagram, “More than grateful to you, my Lord, for sending another great blessing to our family. On November 27, a princess came to our lives to brighten up our days. Your little brother, your daddy and I were waiting for you with great eagerness. Welcome to the world, my baby girl. Alía Horford Vega," she captioned the photo. Congrat- ulations on a beautiful addition to the family and we wish you all health, happiness and many years of joy. □ 26 PAGEANTRY ageantry & PromTime celebrate our fashion showcase models capturing the crown as we congratulate 2017 models (see this issue of Pageantry) Siria Ysabel Bojorquez and Joy Mayfield. Siria Ysabel Bojorquez was crowned Miss Multiverse 2016 at the Coco Bongo Stage, Down Town Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The 5th edition pageant and 3rd edition Reality TV series "I am Multiverse" showing this adventurous and chal- lenging contest amongst in- ternational contestants from 30 nations took place at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana and will be broadcasted early 2017. SIRIA YSABEL BOJORQUEZ Joy Mayfield was 14 when her “happy go lucky lifestyle began to change.” As she slept one night, the seventh grader began to shake vio- lently. She awoke with foam around her mouth, blood vessels popped in her face and a general feeling of con- fusion. Although she would- n’t understand until later what had happened, she had suffered a grand mal seizure. Though such seizures can have other causes, the most common is epilepsy, a condi- tion with which Mayfield was eventually diagnosed. She’s a regular visitor to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, where JOY MAYFIELD she offers herself as an ex- ample of how to live a good life despite epilepsy. Before her sen- ior year at Bartram Trail High School Mayfield was named 2016 Miss Jax Teen USA. In the Miss Florida Teen USA competition she was third runner-up and was named Miss Congeniality.
