your look ● fashion forecast By Kaye Davis Something for Everyone The mantra for prom, pageant, and social occasion in 2018 is “You Do You” L eave the cookie cutter behind. The broad range of looks spotted on the WORLD OF PROM run- way indicate that party-goers and pageant hope- fuls will definitely be able to find a look that speaks to their personal styles in the coming year. From sleek and sophisticated to boho, from spaghetti straps to full sleeves, it’s all here. PURPLE REIGN The Color of the Year 2018 is Ultra Violet. The striking shade and its purple cousins are the perfect backdrop for ball gowns, fit and flare dresses, and two pieces. Extra sparkle on a purple gown is positively regal. SPAGHETTI READY After a multi-year hiatus, the spaghetti strap is back on top. Beaded, double, or just for decoration, thin straps are back in. This iteration is definitely more for looks with im- proved construction that takes the pressure off these deli- cate details. IN THE NAVY This ultra-sophisticated hue is a bit softer than black, but more subdued than the brighter blues that have been trending. The versatile shade is truly a year-round option, perfect for both a prom girl wanting a more mature look, a title-holder making an appearance, and a woman attending a formal event. SHORT STORY Have a customer who just wants to dance? Designers have the perfect solution: a gown with shorts. Whether peekaboo shorts under a high slit or under a skirt of just sheer tulle and lace, how much leg the wearer shows is up to her. 30 PAGEANTRY PURPLE REIGN GRAY GARDENS From gunmetal to slate to dove to metallic, shades of gray were spotted all over the WORLD OF PROM run- way. Sophisticated cuts, bold patterns, plus stone and se- quin detailing take these looks from drab to fab. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Free spirts found their place on the runway. Ladies with a more bohemian style will find gowns with favorite ele- ments including peasant tops, fringe, unique patterns, and chunky lace in colors such as dusty rose designed in suede and other surprising fabrics. GOING FOR GOLD Gowns take on a luxe look with just the right amount of gold dusting. The accent is especially striking on blue and white fabrics in abstract or geometric patterns.
