10 steps to healthy hair

If there’s one part of our body that endures the stresses of everyday life, aside from our skin, it’s our hair. From sun exposure to harsh chemical processes, even the everyday use of styling products, our hair is under constant stress. Our hair is probably the first thing a judge, agent, or casting director notices as it frames our face. Unhealthy hair can have a detrimental effect on our appearance and should not be ignored. Limp, thinning, damaged, or dirty hair is a non-starter for those who value a good appearance. Regardless of our styling preferences, a healthy head of hair shows your commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
How do we obtain a healthy head of hair? What can we do to ensure our hair looks clean, healthy, shiny, and full? The answer is simple. In addition to a healthy lifestyle, we can develop a healthy head of hair by following an easy hair regime that promotes beautiful and luxurious hair.
To help you formulate a winning hair care routine, we’ve selected our Top 10 Steps to healthy hair.

1: Choosing the Right Shampoo
This step is essential and not all shampoos are the same. Select a shampoo that is formulated for your distinct hair type whether it be dry, oily, or color treated. Choose a shampoo that is free from overly harsh chemicals.

2: Rinse Before Shampoo

Thoroughly wet your hair with lukewarm water before applying your selected shampoo. Rinsing removes dirt, oil, and product buildup, allowing the shampoo to cleanse effectively and opens the hair follicles.

3: Easy on the Shampoo

When cleaning our hair, more is not better. A quarter sized amount of shampoo in your palm should be sufficient, regardless of your hair length. Too much shampoo can remove our natural oils and lead to dry and brittle hair.

4: Massaging the Scalp

This is an important step and the bonus is it feels great. Massaging our scalp promotes blood circulation and will promote healthy hair growth. Always massage in a circular motion with your fingertips and pay attention to problem areas that are overly oily or prone to dandruff.

5: Condition Smartly

Again, more is not better. As with shampoo, select a hair conditioner that is designed for your hair type, whether it’s to moisturize, add volume, or color-protect. Letting the conditioner sit for a few minutes ensures we help lock in moisture.

6: Cool Down

Forget the hot and steamy shower when taking care of your hair. A nice cool rinse after conditioning is what we want. Using cooler water helps close the hair cuticle, lock in moisture, and promote a healthy shine.

7: Towel Time

This is not the time to vigorously attack your hair. Overly harsh towel drying can lead to hair breakage and the development of frizz. Gently pat your hair, no rubbing, to remove excess water and to avoid any damage.

8: Removing Tangles

Easy does it. Do not pull, tug, or yank through any knots or tangles to prevent breakage. Using a wide tooth comb or brush, gently remove tangles and knots from your freshly dried hair. Starting from the ends of your hair, work your way up the strands to the roots using a downward motion.

9: Control the Heat

Heat is extremely harsh on our hair and is a major cause of damage. In our industry, we are constantly changing our hairstyles and we should limit the use of heat when possible. This includes the overuse of blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. When using heat, always protect your hair with a heat protectant spray before use and keep the heat to the lowest setting possible.

10: Trimming Tips

Let’s keep our hair looking full and healthy with a scheduled trimming appointment. A great rule-of-thumb would be to schedule your trim in 6-8 week timeframes, depending on the speed at which your hair grows. This will remove any split ends and present your hair as healthy, full, and free from damage.
