Olivia Culpo told Vogue that getting married in a church was Christian McCaffrey’s dream and “our number one priority.” Olivia said she sees marriage as “the beginning of the rest of your life — and it’s the union and bond of two people forever,” and that’s why she wanted a wedding dress “that felt as serious as that commitment.” The former Miss USA and Miss Universe stated that she didn’t want a dress that would “exude sex in any way, shape, or form.” Instead, she wanted a gown that would “feel effortless and as if it’s complementing me, not overpowering me.” She ultimately chose on a long-sleeved, crew-neck Dolce & Gabbana gown with a 16-foot lace veil.

Miss America Announces Collaboration with American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Initiatives Promoting Women’s Heart Health

Miss America, the iconic 100+ year brand, and Miss America’s Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)(3), announce a 3-year commitment supporting American Heart Association’s women’s initiative, Go Red for Women® raising awareness of women’s heart health and bringing fitness initiatives back to the national competition stage.

Miss America’s CEO Robin Fleming feels that, “Empowering women in America means making health a priority – heart disease is the leading cause of death for women ages 20 and older. We need to raise awareness and incorporate fitness initiatives to create better outcomes.” The American Heart Association, devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, has been on the forefront of fighting heart disease and strokes for a century. Since 2004, Go Red for Women has supported women through every season of life as their trusted, relevant source for credible, equitable health solutions.

“In the 20 years Go Red for Women has worked to save and improve women’s lives, one thing we’ve learned is women—particularly young women—need to know heart disease doesn’t discriminate,” said Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association. “Anyone can be a lifesaver,” she continued. “You just need to know the signs and symptoms and have confidence to speak up. The life you save could be your own.”

Miss America’s support for the Go Red for Women movement will encompass public awareness campaigns, community outreach, fundraising for health initiatives and participant scholarship opportunities, as well as highlighting women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). All efforts to further an overall goal of improving women’s health and well-being. Both organizations will harness their collective reach to advocate for a heart-healthy America.

Sheynnis Palacio of Nicaragua captures the crown of Miss Universe

Congratulations to your newly crowned Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis Palacio of Nicaragua! Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis captured the crown in a spectacular show in El Salvador. Her cause this year will be mental health, which stems from her own experiences with anxiety.

Sheynnis Palacios is an 23-year-old mental health activist and audiovisual producer from Managua, Nicaragua. She usually prefers to be behind the camera, but she’s come out of the wings because she believes in finding solutions for as many of the world’s problems as she can.

As a problem-solving kind of person, she put herself through the communications program at her university by working in her mom’s snack business. When the business faltered in an economic crisis, her mother migrated north to find a better job, and she became the economic and emotional support for her grandmother and young brother.

Coming from a country where this issue is rarely addressed, she started an accessible initiative called “Understand Your Mind,” in which she interviews a specialist on emotional care in her television segments. She has also produced events and other audiovisual projects on this theme. Her goal in life is to work in the service of humanity, by running a newsroom and producing content and commercials for international brands. #missuniverse #shetnnispalacio #pageantrymagazine #pageantry #beautypageant #pageants #crown #pageantlife

This was announced as R’Bonney Gabriel, current titleholder, walked as a surprise model in fashion label Tanner Fletcher’s NYFW SS24 show, for a collection titled “Beauty Pageant.” The show featured models of all ages, reminding the audience that women and beauty are not defined by age – and that the Miss Universe program should not be, either.
“During our January show, R’Bonney was asked about an age extension, and she said – ‘if not now, when?’,” said Amy Emmerich, CEO of MUO. “She was our muse in making this decision, but it’s been a long time coming. As women, we all understand that youth is not and has never been a requirement for beauty, and there’s no reason why it should be a requirement for Miss Universe.”

This change will apply for all 2024 pageants globally. Starting then, every adult woman in the world will be eligible to compete to be Miss Universe. (Contestants must be 18 to join, and Miss Teen USA rules will not be changed.)

Paula Shugart, MUO President, said, “For years, we’ve had requests from fans and partners all over the world, reminding us that there is not a place for this restriction in an inclusive organization like ours. We agree, and look forward to this next chapter of the Miss Universe legacy.”

Gabriel said, “As the oldest titleholder to date, I was very close to aging out of the competition myself, and I wanted my legacy here to be a shift in how we think about beauty and age going forward. I’m so glad to see that this will be a permanent change for my Miss Universe sisters.”“We are thrilled to have partnered with the Miss Universe Organization on a Beauty Pageant of our very own,’ says Fletcher Kasell, Co-Founder/ Co-Creative Director of Tanner Fletcher. “It’s wonderful to open up the world of Tanner Fletcher to other organizations who share a similar, uplifting and empowering vision. We are aligned on the belief that all people no matter the societal boxes they have been put into deserve to act as their authentic selves and be celebrated for it.”

For the 2023 season, Miss Universe also lifted restrictions around married women, divorced women, pregnant women, and mothers joining the program. To date, two mothers will be competing in this year’s finale. That show will take place in El Salvador on November 18 2023.

Miss Universe Enters The Streaming Era

The 71st Miss Universe competition is the latest TV event making the move to streaming. The Roku Channel has sealed a one-year deal to be the official English-language home for Miss Universe, which will stream live from New Orleans on January 14, 2023, at 7 p.m. ET.

Among the changes in the move: Steve Harvey, who had hosted for five years as part of the pageant’s deal with Fox (with the exception of 2021, when that pact was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic), also won’t be back. According to Miss Universe Organization CEO Amy Emmerich, a new host — expected to be a female — will be announced in the coming weeks.

“My goal was really to make sure we led with a female lens this next go-around,” Emmerich says. “We should hopefully have that to talk about soon… It was a rare opportunity to be able to kind of restart in a whole new place.”

Emmerich had just joined Miss Universe in January, and has been busy looking at ways to reform and refresh the organization. And with the U.S. English-language deal up (it continues to also air in Spanish on Telemundo), Emmerich said she was looking to reimagine Miss Universe’s global distribution.

“I would love to offer one large package and go global because the global audience is so massive, but we’re tied up in a lot of different territory deals,” she says. “That won’t end for another year. So, we said, OK, the best thing that can happen for this brand is go to a place that’s also starting anew. Right away WME suggested Roku. I’m familiar with [Roku originals head] David [Eilenberg] from the past and he had just joined there. From the first conversation, you kind of knew it was the place to be. Roku just always had a personality. They really are consistent with who they are, even with the original programming to come. And Miss Universe needed take some chances.”

“As more and more marquee events move to streaming, we’re excited to bring these exclusive experiences for free to our audience,” said Roku programming VP Rob Holmes.

Because it’s on a streaming service, the Miss Universe 2023 event will be seen live across the country. Emmerich said Miss Universe and Roku are currently looking at unique ways to play with commercial breaks and other telecast elements.

“Now that we have Roku, what exclusively can we do for them during this commercial space that that audience can feel like they’re seeing more of the inside, behind the scenes,” she says. “I joined here hoping to bring a level of transparency that I don’t think exists at the organization and Roku kind of loved that idea. It’s also a great time to just watch the data and see what works.”

Miss Universe Organization Announces Contestant Eligibility Change

As announced by the Miss Universe Organization CEO Amy Emmerich: The Miss Universe Organization has always strived to evolve with the changing times to best represent and support women globally. Since I arrived at the organization in January 2022, I have been evaluating our processes, procedures, and rules regarding eligibility, to ensure they represented the brand’s values. Paula (Shugart), President of the Organization, has been with me on this journey. As part of the next step in our evolution, we have implemented the following changes:

Effective with the 72nd Miss Universe competition and national preliminary competitions leading up to it, women who are or have been married, as well as women who are pregnant or have children, will be able to compete.

Earlier this year, we conducted surveys with our audience and you, our directors. The feedback was overwhelming that we all believe women should have agency over their lives, and that a human’s personal decisions should not be a barrier to their success. Recent data also shows that the average age of marriage for women and first-time pregnancy, globally begins at 21. Despite the difference in our cultures and beliefs, this allows all women to put their fate in their own hands and we will accommodate whoever is Miss Universe accordingly. We look forward to continue welcoming even more aspirational women to our community as a result of these latest changes.

The application of the new eligibility requirements will not apply to the Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Tying the Knot: … Miss Universe 2017 Deim-Leigh Nel-Peters married Tim Tebow in her homeland of South Africa this past weekend.Tebow said when the couple was deciding where to have the wedding — after they got engaged in January of 2019 — he knew how much having it in South Africa would mean to his then fiancee.

Pageantry Newsline Breaking News: Miss America Organization and the Miss America Foundation Announce New Equity and Justice Scholarship

The Miss America Organization and the Miss America Foundation are pleased to announce the establishment of a new scholarship to be awarded during the 2020 Miss America Competition.

The Equity and Justice Scholarship will be a $3000 scholarship awarded to the candidate who best exemplifies inclusion and acceptance of these principles into her social impact initiative.

While the scholarship will be awarded through a family trust, the donor chooses to remain anonymous. In reaching out to the Miss America Organization, the donor made clear the important reason for the generous gift. As a young woman who wanted to compete in a local Miss America competition in the 1980’s, she was discouraged by her parents because they believed “Miss America does not look like us, and an educated woman does not parade around in a swimsuit.”

“Miss America 2.0 represents the attributes of a program that puts inclusivity and diversity at the core of preparing great women for the world and prepare the world for great women.” said Shantel Krebs, Miss America Organization board of directors chair, in welcoming the scholarship.

“The Miss America Foundation is pleased to offer this scholarship which represents such important issues this generation of young women will have to address as they finish their educations and move into their careers,” said Greg Petroff, Miss America Foundation board of trustees chair.

All 51 candidates for Miss America 2020 are eligible to apply for the scholarship by writing a one page essay that shows specific examples of how equity and justice are integrated into the candidate’s social impact initiative to date; what ideas the candidate puts forward that, if selected for the job of Miss America, will build on her work; and how the candidate will use the scholarship to advance her education by building on her social impact initiative work.
