Achieving knock-out hair like red-carpet celebrities no longer requires following strict rules. Just let these easy looks—and some styling
professional help—be your guide.
Once again, we’re about to arrive at the height of prom season, and the questions about hairstyle options continue to mount. Short or long? Up or down? Straight or curly? Color change or natural color? This year, though, the pressure’s off, because anything goes! Just look at the hairdos showing up on the the red carpets these days and you’ll see what I mean. Celebrities are opting for shorter, easier-to-keep hairstyles while also working with the natural texture of their hair. During the week I spent creating many of the looks for the models in the 2007 Pageantry and PromTime Fashion Showcase photo shoot, that was a strategy the styling team carried out as well to great effect.
Hair color options abound, too, and can vary anywhere from avante garde to more natural chocolate browns as well as blond-on-blond. The industry trend is leaning more toward block coloring and solid shades than chunky or fine highlights and lowlights—but colorists are still keeping skin tones in mind when choosing a hair color, and you should as well.
Makeup options are also reaching many extremes, with looks from barely there or “nude” to much the more dramatic—even appliqués of glitter or gems—being tempting options. Just remember that it’s a good idea to gauge your makeup with your chosen hairstyle to complement your overall look.
The styles I created on these pages can serve as inspirations for your do-it-yourself beauty treatments at home. Or, if you’re in doubt about your own styling skills, you should opt for a professional consultation prior to that special occasion—whether prom, holiday party, or any gala event—because professional stylists and makeup artists are better trained and equipped to effortlessly pull these looks together.
