Reaping the Fruits of Your Labor

By Mike Mauney

What body shape you are — apple, pear, or banana — will determine the best workout pattern to deliver sweet weight-loss success.

I’m sure everyone would agree that you can’t have a nice swimsuit figure if you are overweight. There are many factors that determine if a person is overweight, and this will vary with each individual. You must consider age, height, and bone structure when determining if a person is carrying excess baggage.

Height is a very important factor in determining what you should weigh, because 10 pounds over the ideal weight for someone who measures 5 ft. 2 in. is of more concern than 10 pounds on someone who stands 5 ft. 8 in.

Your bone structure also determines how much weight you can carry without being considered overweight. A person with a larger bone structure can weigh more than someone of the same height with a smaller bone structure.

There are three basic body shapes to consider when designing a fitness program. Some people have very narrow shoulders but are wider at the hips. Some people refer to this as pear shape. Some are more round and carry their weight in the waist, hips, and thighs. This is referred to as apple shape. Others are lean and carry their weight evenly throughout their entire body. This is commonly referred to as banana shape. Each body style would require a different fitness program.
